LAS VEGAS (Dec. 3, 2019) – Skye Canyon and Lee Canyon presented Project 150, a local nonprofit that assists disadvantaged and homeless high school students, with 140 coats, jackets, and zip-up hoodies, and 50 beanies collected during Lee Canyon’s Spread the Warmth coat and beanie drive, along with a $5,000 donation from Skye Canyon as a part of the master planned community’s Skye Serves program. The presentation took place at 9 a.m. at Skye Center on Giving Tuesday, Dec. 3.
Angela Rock, executive director of Olympia Companies Charitable Foundation and Jim Seely, Lee Canyon’s marketing director, presented Kelli Kristo, Project 150’s executive director, with the check and donated items. Olympia Companies is the developer of Skye Canyon where community residents who are active participants in the community’s Skye Serves resident volunteer program were also in attendance, along with Lee Canyon and Skye Canyon staff.
“For the second consecutive year, we’ve teamed up with Lee Canyon to spread the warmth for our Skye Serves Giving Tuesday initiative,” said Rock. “We believe that all kids deserve a chance, and Project 150 provides at-risk high school students the opportunity to succeed in school by providing the necessary support and services, and a sense of safety.”
Skye Canyon committed to contributing $25 per coat up to $5,000 for every coat donated at Skye Center. Other partners in the drive included REI Boca Park, Powder & Sun, and Burton Outlet Store.
Lee Canyon is a partner in Skye Canyon’s Skye Pass program offering Skye Canyon residents exclusive benefits, including special rates on season passes as well as one-day lift and tubing tickets.
“Lee Canyon is committed to giving back to our city, and we align with Skye Canyon because they share our values,” said Seely.
Project 150 is a Las Vegas-based nonprofit organization that provides support and services for more than 6,300 underprivileged high school students so they can remain in school, graduate, and build a bright future. Many of the teens who utilize Project 150’s services don’t have a place to sleep at night. Others have been the head of the household since they were ten years old; in the most extreme cases, they are younger. Since Project 150 believes that education is critical for teens to build a productive life once they reach adulthood, the nonprofit stipulates that teens receiving Project 150 assistance must have valid high school student identification.
Launched in 2012, Giving Tuesday is recognized globally as the official start of the season of giving. In seven years, the initiative raised over $1 billion online in the United States alone. The Project 150 donation on Giving Tuesday demonstrates both Skye Canyon and Lee Canyon’s commitment to serving the youth in our community.
